Description:
B-52 stratofortress lands without a tail
In 1964, a B-52 flying over New Mexico hit severe turbulence that tore off its massive tail fin. Though the loss of the tail caused the bomber to lose control, the crew acted fast. By carefully modulating the thrust of the aircraft's eight engines to regain directional stability, they managed to bring the aircraft under control and land it safely.
